Towne Square Concept E - Facelift

As part of our plan to revitalize Oakville’s historic downtown, the town is redesigning Towne Square, a small but unique public space located at 210 Lakeshore Road. Building on the work done on the downtown streetscape design, a new design for Towne Square will enhance the vibrancy of the neighbourhood and provide more opportunities for public events.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • If you like some elements from one design, but other elements from another, feel free to take a mix and match approach. Please clearly indicate your preferences in your comments.
  • Most of Towne Square is built over an underground parking garage, making it a challenge to plant trees in the space.

  1. This is a nice concept. Real grass should be used. A more natural feel and softer to walk on. Plenty of large trees to provide shade

As I said, lots of natural grass and plenty of large shade trees to make sitting comfortable. This square should be a gathering place for young and old. Soften the pavement design. Busy patterns will become outdated quickly.

  6. Love this updated version of the old

This version gets my vote! No need for water feature. Real Grass, as many trees as you can get in and lots of all-weather seating, plus enough space around to put folding chairs during events! LOVE IT

  7. Kids Love the Square

Kids use the square all the time. Keep the grass real and go with the plan with the most seating. Wavy lines will look dated quickly. The plantings are great.

  8. Natural green space

Important to maintain natural green space. Real grass, kids can play while parents supervise on surrounding seating area. Seating areas to be designed for all weather since it’s a high traffic areas throughout all four seasons. The current arrangement is kid friendly and I’d prefer it stay that way. Definitely focus of greenery.

  9. A nice "rest stop".

The more seating the better; it encourages people/consumers to investigate downtown on foot with a "rest stop" available. Add trash containers and probably recycle options. People may have lunch here! I have one query, how many children live in the downtown core, or will be driven there? Shouldn't this be geared more for adults?

  11. Real grass please!

Don’t use turf if you’re trying to create a green space. Keep it real!

  12. Aligns with Downtown Oakville’s classic look. With a more modern look. The added seating will help with events. The more trees the better!!

  13. I like the large grass area. Maybe cut back on some of the centre court trees which may interfere with stage events in the square

  16. I like the green aspect of this one

I think it's important to maintain and create as much green space as possible in an era of climate change. Making sure we're promoting the planting and growth of more trees is important and I would like to keep things as natural as possible.

  17. A Facelift Isn't Enough

The competition for consumers is higher than ever. Experiential environments are now expected. There's no Wow factor with a Facelift. Simply take a walk through any mall redevelopment to understand what's happening.
We can, and need, to do better to attract and retain consumers to downtown Oakville. The status quo is merely death waiting to happen.
