Towne Square Concept B

As part of our plan to revitalize Oakville’s historic downtown, the town is redesigning Towne Square, a small but unique public space located at 210 Lakeshore Road.

Building on the work done on the downtown streetscape design, a new design for Towne Square will enhance the vibrancy of the neighbourhood and provide more opportunities for public events.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • These are just preliminary concepts. They will be refined based on stakeholder and public feedback and will be presented again to the public in early fall.

  • If you like some elements from one design, but other elements from another, feel free to take a mix and match approach. Please clearly indicate your preferences in your comments.

  • Although not shown in all images, a section of grass can be incorporated into all preliminary design concepts.

  • Most of Towne Square is built over an underground parking garage, making it a challenge to plant trees in the space.

  1. More grass and less concrete. Lots of larger trees (in pots if necessary) for shade. Clock must remain. Plenty of benches. Ice rink .

There should be ramps and few stairs. This area should keep a small town gathering place feel. The oval water feature on the east wall is enough. Lots of trees with benches under the. Room for a tree at Christmas and the lighting ceremony. Plenty of grass to have a park like setting.

  2. Concept B is the most user friendly of the designs but still needs improvement. It needs as much grass space as possible.

Less concrete, more grass, more benches! The parking garage shouldn't be so prominent and it's design should also be in keeping with the historical charm of Oakville. The clock must remain as well. The water feature is taking up too much valuable people space.

  3. Universal/Accessible Design a Must!

Regardless of the final outcome, a universal or accessible design should be incorporated so that all people with different abilities can enjoy and easily access. The pattern for the walking surface is of concern. For those who are blind or have low vision, a contrasting pattern/color and tactile surface should be used to guide people accordingly.

  4. My favourite because there is grass to relieve the heat. Needs a ramp so wheelchairs & strollers avoid restaurant serving areas by umbrella

Needs a well placed ramp so wheelchairs & strollers avoid restaurant serving areas by umbrellas. Would not feel welcome trundling through there. Please add shade: pergolas/trees/awnings.

  5. Definitely the best idea

By far the best idea because it has green space, the other ones look too modern. More greenery suits Oakville.

  6. I like Concept B - But with the changes I made in my Comments.Oakville's Heritage should be kept in mind with few or no steps for easy usage

Oakville's Heritage should be kept in mind with graduated or no steps for easy usage . Oakville is a 4 season Town so why not have a skating rink in the centre which converts to play gathering space in other seasons. Toronto accomplished this so why can't Oakville. This Area could also be used for band concerts on various occassions. No patterned concrete looks too busy. What about up kept during the 4 Seasons. Should have lots of permanent sitting areas. Lots of lighting which should be kept in line with our heritage. The Town sometimes forgets that Oakville resident…

  7. Is the green in the centre grass? We need to maintain GRASS!!!

Great to see as much grass as possible.
Families need the grass so that children can play there

  8. Best idea to keep some grass for yoga and children's play. More trees for shade and a central ramp into the square more awnings for shade

Central ramp into square with the stairs. More trees. Grass is very important. Every restaurant must have awnings. More benches for seating is a must

  9. I like this because it has some grass

Grass is critical to whichever design you select.....all are quite nice. All you have to do is be in Towne Square when there are lots of kids under 10 around. They love and need the grass to work off their energy.

  11. This concept best reflects the direction of our town

green space to reflect liveable Oakville (keep grass and have shrubbery or whatever can grow given the parking structure),

Accessible- limit stairs in favour of ramps and have lots of seating areas

Able to promote the town and it’s culture- an area where a stage can be put up, performers can operate and crowds can gather.

This option is the closest of the 3 to achieving those things while the others (while beautiful) do not allow for any of the above. Events that bring crowds downtown like movie nights and live music and giving kids an area to play during…

  12. The grass is key

    • I like the oval shape and the water element, it relaxes the atmosphere and makes the place less 'square', which can be an imposing shape due to the smallish size.

  13. Best consideration of universal design

But could still be enhanced. Graded steps from Lakeshore access are more open, but a graded incline would enhance accessibility for all.

  14. This is the design that allows for most mixed community use! Love the extra grass space.

I think this design is most conducive to a mix of uses such as "yoga in the park", outdoor concerts (with grass & bleacher seating), picnics, and child friendly entertainment. Too much pavement is known to retain heat and some grass is a nice place to rest after a long walk; especially if you just grabbed a sandwich or maybe some desserts from a local vendor. The water features are a nice touch that offers visual interest as well as some water-play in groupings for those who are young or young-at-heart.

  15. Grass essential so only option worth considering, but has accessibility issues

Towne Square absolutely needs grass, not a concrete precinct, and it doesn't need a second water feature. The current layout is superior to all these options.
There doesn't seem to be sufficient space between the steps and patios for pedestrians, wheelchairs and pushchairs to navigate across the square.
Also, where is the town clock in these designs?

  16. See below for details

-very important to have green space
-looks like steps could also be used as seating
-seems more casual with ability to enjoy drinks/snacks without having to be seated at a restaurant

  18. Great becasuse of green space, needs to be multipurpose

make sure what ever area you create has room to be used as a stage area for downtown events to have musicians for like midnight madness and such.
