2017 Citizen Survey — We want to hear from you Oakville!

To ensure we’re meeting your service expectations, every two years we survey a random sample of Oakville residents to find out if we’re hitting our mark.

We’ve opened up our Idea Forum to find out what YOU think makes Oakville most livable and what we can do to make it better.

Ideas submitted until February 17, 2017, were shared with Council on April 3, 2017 as part of the Citizen Survey report findings. However, we encourage you to continue to post your ideas, vote on others and share your favourites on Twitter and Facebook to let us know what makes Oakville livable!

You have ten votes (maximum three votes per idea), so use them to show support for your favourite idea(s). Remember to visit often. You can always change your vote as new ideas come in.

Now let’s get started!

Tell us what you think makes Oakville livable or what we need to do to make it more livable?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".
(thinking…)

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. Replace all "Barrell" trash cans with Squirrel/ racoon proof garbage cans with spring lids. Replace all recycling bins with Capped Bins.

There is trash all over Bronte on Lakeshore Blvd and along the parks that line the lake. The reasons: 1.) The city Trash Barrels are wide open and wildlife get into them and trash is strewn about and blows into the lake and all over the neighborhood. The other is there are no caps on recycling bins? This is the worst polluter... a little wind and we have recyclable material blowing about everywhere... again ending up in the Lake. Oakville needs to put pressure on Halton region to issue recycling bins with lids on them!!! This is paramount as we…

    • Make Oakville transit better and more affordable.

Oakville transit routes are long, confusing and the price is getting to be unaffordable for many.

      • Maintain Bronte Beach better and keep it free of pets.

The beach is being spoiled by litter and dogs - some running wild off-leash. The beach needs to be a clean place and safe for people walking or lying on the sand. There are other parks where dogs can be either on or off leashes.

        • Ban & fine($$$) any company advertising on public property including signs on grass & posters on poles. It's messy, distracting & polluting.

Companies should not target an area with advertising signs on every corner resulting in free advertising for them at the expense and dislike of the majority of neighbourhood residents and degradation of the neighbourhood. You see them plastered everywhere on walks or while driving and they just get get blown away or trashed. It looks terrible. This is really a form of polluting, like throwing something away on the road. Companies that that do this should be fined for each sign or sticker they put up plus the cost of removal. The same with stickers on poles that deface public…

          • An uptown fire!

We need a nice uptown core. Not just filled with Walmart and take out places but great restaurants like downtown Oakville or Bronte has!

            • Happy Town - More Walkable, Bicycle Friendly Town

Research has shown that people who live in suburbs are much less trusting of other people than people who live in walkable neighborhoods where housing is mixed with shops, services, and places to work. This is because they have far fewer relationships with people who live nearby. And yet the overwhelming message of happiness research is that relationships with other people have the biggest influence on our happiness.

For Oakville to be a more livable city we must reduce the dependency on a car to get around and the sprawl of developments that require a car. The only solution to…

              • a pedestrian/bicycle bridge at the harbours.

Create a pedestrian bridge at the harbours, Oakville and Bronte. This will allow people to walk and ride the waterfront and take in the beauty of the harbours and creeks. They will attract people down to the gift of the great Lake Ontario. They will should be designed with respect to the dynamic yacht facilities. They would promote fitness and activity and even tourism. they would help reinforce the beautiful waterfront trail. they would be people centric, not car centric. they would be affordable and for all visitors to the harbours.

                  • Develop the town-owned, historic Metro Marine building in Bronte Harbour into a Great Lakes Environmental Learning Centre

In conjunction with Oakville's current waterfront redevelopment plans, the Metro Marine building offers an excellent opportunity to create a Great Lakes Environmental Learning Centre that could house a myriad of displays and exhibits, including:
                    - clean water initiatives
                    - freshwater fish habitat exhibits and aquariums
                    - boatbuilding demonstrations
                    - sport fishing seminars, and
                    - water safety programs

                    • Create inviting pedestrian friendly downtown

Add patios, plantings and pedestrian-friendly features to the shopping district. Perhaps a narrower one way shopping hub where there is room for outdoor stalls restaurant patios and where it is safe to cross the road and breathe less fumes while shopping or dining

                      • We all need to work on the trails, parks and gardens and working with the wildlife that all ready exists.

Corridors that keep the north, south, east and west connected for all inhabitants. The corridors should include wetlands, grazing, water that is flowing. A liveable approach for all.

                            • An after-hours overnight medical clinic for South central Oakville that is a satellite site of the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.

An overnight after-hours medical clinic is needed in South Central Oakville now that our OTMH has moved. Young children, the elderly, and those with life threatening conditions like Asthma, COPD, Heart Conditions, life threatening allergies, or Diabetic emergencies, etc. in South Oakville find the new OTMH too far a distance to travel to in an emergency. We need an over night clinic or ER in this part of town that can service the aging population, and those who need emergency services in the middle of the night, when all other after-hours clinics are closed.

                              • New public trails that connect the 16 mile creek trail from north Oakville all the way down to downtown Oakville and the lake

With the most likely upcoming development of Glen Abbey Golf Course into a residential area, it will unlock the public lands that surround 16 mile creek that have only been only accessible to mainly golfers due to the golf course being privately owned and having 5 or so holes built on public land. This gives the Town time to start planning now for some wonderful public trails that would connect Oakville together and be a gorgeous part of Oakville where families want to live. It would be accessible for all families, joggers, bikers, etc... to enjoy any day and any…

                                • less asphalt, more paving stones

A lot of money seems to be spent on resurfacing side streets, parking lots, trails with asphalt. It is a waste, environmentally destructive. Also the quality of asphalt seems inadequate. It needs to be re-done too often causing traffic congestion. Better standards need to be demanded from contractors. In downtown areas where driving speed should be lowered and the road may need to be dug up often for repairs of utilities paving stones would be a good alternative. They do not need to be disposed just lifted up and put back in place afterwards. Seen in many European cities.

                                  • Dogs off leash

About half of families in Oakville have dogs and 99% of them are friendly pets. Lots of families socialize with their pets, friendships are made around them. To spend so much manpower to harass people to try to force them to keep dogs on leash all the time (which is animal cruelty) just because few vocal citizens complain is unreasonable. Taking dogs to leash free parks is not a solution: many serious injuries to dogs occur there. Most dog owners are responsible and know when not to release their animals. The mandatory on leash law will not deter irresponsible owners…

                                    • Less salt

The town uses massive amounts of salt on roads, trails (!!) and parking lots needlessly. It is bad for the environment, corrodes the cars, roads, terrible for dogs feet. People should just use their judgement and slow down, and buy WINTER TIRES.

                                      • Build a 200m indoor RUNNING track in the old hospital site community centre.

Oakville needs a safe and proper 200m indoor running track so that people can commit to healthy living and activities throughout the entire year despite outdoor weather conditions and traffic!

                                        • Oakville should declare a population freeze. 40% of jobs will be redundant in a decade. We already have 244 per square mile.

Oakville should declare a population freeze. It was just announced that 40% of jobs will be redundant in a decade. Southern Ontario already has a population of 244 per square mile and the most dangerous and crowded highways in North America. Increasing the number of people in Oakville will only decrease the quality of life.
